Lena Wolff's is a bay area artist who creates whimsical world of hand painted paper cut collages. She starts by building background for her work with thin layers of gray paint which is then rubbed with powdered graphite. The paper surface is punctured with a needle to create pin pricks and then hand-painted cut pieces are pasted along with various sizes of hole-punched paper.
Her work is inspired by "by folk art, especially early American folk art, anthropomorphic fables, the natural world, textiles" and is often populated with animals, insects, birds and plants. The artist says: "I’m moved by everything living, the phenomena that makes it all happen and I like to make work that celebrates this."
