Arie van 't Riet is a Holland based physicist who studied radiation physics at Delft University of Technology and obtained his PhD from Utrecht University. He became an artist by an accident when his friend asked him to x-ray one of his paintings. It was his first time doing something like that but it worked and he got curious about what other objects could he x-ray. He started with a bouquet of tulips which resembled a black and white negative. After the image was digitized and colorized in Photoshop, he got stunning and interesting results. He calls these beautiful works "bioramas."
From flowers he gradually moved to animals. He uses only dead animals for his work, animals who were killed in traffic accidents and recently deceased pets of friends so no live animal is harmed with radiation.
From his website, "I prefer [to] X-ray objects of ordinary scenes like a butterfly nearby a flower, a fish in the ocean, a mouse in the field, a heron along the riverside, a bird in a tree and so on. Each time it is challenging me to arrive at an X-ray photograph that represents the sentiment of the scene, to raise questions and excite curiosity. I hope, in most of the images presented here, I succeeded."
