Massachusetts based artist Salley Mavor of Wee Folk Studio creates enchanting hand embroidered artwork which is reproduced in award-winning children's books. Ever since was a little girl she had a passion for sewing. She grew up playing with needle & thread, and was never satisfied with crayons alone.
"I found that I could communicate my ideas more clearly this way and that my hands would direct me in a compelling way. " - Shares the artist.
Her earlier pieces were soft sculpture which evolved to 3 dimensional pictures with raised figures and objects on a fabric background. Her work is detailed, full of patterns from nature and all stitched by hand. For last 35 years she has been illustrating children’s books with her work - a unique blend of materials, found objects and sewing techniques. Her charming characters, animals and birds after being created are photographed and printed in her children's books. One of her spectacular creations, Pocketful of Posies: A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes won 2011 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for picture book and 2011 Golden Kite Award for Illustration.
