Yvonne Herbst: Felted Creatures

Born in Germany Yvonne Herbst is presently working and living in Everett, Washington. After graduating with Bachelor in Arts degree from Waldorf school she worked as a painter for 10 years at Pixar Animation Studios but felt she needed to branch out and find other mediums to work with. She taught herself sewing and started to create amazing life-like creatures. Her needle felted animals have distinctive personality and character. It takes about a week for Herbst to make one single animal.

"The idea to try felting swam around in my head for a year or so before I just bought a small amount of roving and a few needles," she says.

She has an online store Yvonne's Workshop where she sells her needle felted animals. You can join her on facebook for updates on her new work and to see her work in the past.

Owl Gift Bags Tutorial + Printables

Craft Yourself shared a wonderful tutorial with the help of which you can create your own unique owl stand up bag. The tutorial requires a pre-made bag which you customize with owl design or any other design you like. Other option is that you use brown paper bag or make one yourself using fabric scraps, something like this before you put embellishments on it. This is a great bag for a small gift, treats or favors on all kinds of occasions. Once the bag is ready, attach a Valentine's day tag on it which you can download and print for free in four designs.

Package Design: Strong Nutrients

Pearlfisher commissioned Andy Lyons an illustrator based in Mayenne, France to design branding and packing for new nutrients brand called Strong. Andy Lyons created a series of bird illustrations - 13 pieces for the 13 products - each linking to the benefits of the supplements.

Each bird illustration was first sketched in Photoshop, and then using the pen tool the main shapes were drawn. After adding lots of gradients, layers of masks and layers of different paper textures Andrew managed to achieve depth in his pieces that gave the illustrations an impression as if they were sculptures created out of paper!

Karen Welman, founding partner and chief creative officer at Pearlfisher commented: “The idea was to create an high impact visual story using the metaphor of beautiful and elegant birds that have hidden strength. The brand name – Strong – and the playful variant names and descriptors are simple yet high impact and clearly communicate the brand’s promise of inner strength and outer beauty. Pearlfisher created custom hand-drawn typography for the brand name and commissioned a series of bespoke bird illustrations that bring to life the product benefits in an unexpected and emotive way. For example, for ‘brain box’ an owl was used to represent how the powerful combination of cutting edge nutrients promotes optimal brain performance, whilst a bright yellow canary was used for the ‘sunshine pill’ to illustrate the end benefit of a radiant, healthier immune system and stronger bones. The end result is visually arresting creating strong visibility both in retail and online environments.” - via.

Owl Shoes by Sanuk

Sanuk is a footwear company headquartered in Southern California. The brand was founded by Jeff Kelley in 1997 when he started to make sandals using inner tubes and indoor-outdoor carpet. Sanuk is the Thai word for balance and happiness, making it their brand mantra and producing creatively inspired products the company has grown by leaps and bounds. Sanuk footwear is now available across the USA and 50 other countries.

I had never heard of the brand until now but after having read several reviews online by their happy clients I am tempted to get my feet in those owl print shoes. Comfortable check, stylish check, vegan check! Several other designs and styles can be found here.
