Chicago based ceramic artist Laurie Shaman uses slab-built techniques to make beautiful ceramic pieces. She was a studio potter in the town of Mineral Point and for a number of years, she served as the Program Coordinator of the Art in Public Places program, as well as the Visual Arts Coordinator for the Wisconsin Arts Board in Madison. She is a part of Chicago’s Lill Street Art Center and curated many exhibitions involving local and national ceramic artists.
Her ceramics are inspired by figures, nature, townscapes and animals. I love the organic shape in her work which makes each ceramic one-of-a-kind. The ceramics are decorated with hand-drawn portraits, animals and scenes. The vases, wall pieces, tiles, trivets, teapots and urns are painted with stains and glazes that are non-toxic.
She has worked on a six-panel ceramic mural installation "In the Swim," commissioned by the Public Art Program, City of Chicago. It is now on view at the Hayes Park Natatorium located at 2936 W. 85th Street in the Ashburn-Wrightwood community. To see her work in person you can keep an eye on her website for any updates on the future exhibitions and events.
