Birds Made With Tiny Hand-Cut Glass Pieces and Mosaic Tiles

Sarah Pryke is a self-taught mosaic artist who grew up in South Africa surrounded by beautiful wildlife and nature. It was her immense love for the animals that led her to study biological sciences at university where she gained BSc. Hons majoring in Zoology and Entomology. Afterwards she did PhD in evolutionary ecology on bird coloration in Sweden. But fate had something else in store for her, she had to quit her academic career when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. To take her mind off the medical treatments she started to make mosaic tiles from her home studio.

Variety of birds and wildlife that visit her garden is a main inspiration for her work. The shapes, patterns and lines of the subject are precise that come to life when placed into their natural setting that gives her work a realistic feel. To assure the exact color and shape she cuts and re-cuts each tiny glass. Her work are completely handmade from the wrought iron frame to the mosaic tile to the fused glass. To see more of her birds, visit her website Fragments of Africa.
