Ceramic Brooches, Earrings and More With Colorful Illustrations

Fox in the Fog is a cute little store stocked with the most adorable creations by the Lithuanian ceramic artist Lina Svirplele. She makes unique brooches, earrings, plates and wall art featuring colorful tales.

The artist finds inspiration for her work in nature, mythology, folklore, prose and poetry. Her pieces depict fictional characters as well as are inspired by her reality. She uses decoration technique called sgraffitto where a top layer of color is scratched to reveal a color beneath before firing. This method makes her pieces inherently one-of-a-kind. You can learn about her current project on Instagram and find what's available for purchase on her online store.

Mechanical Animals on the Streets of Paris by Ardif

Ardif is a street artist based in Paris. He studied architecture as a career, while working as an architect he was interested in modern, minimalist design in the buildings and intricacy in the the decorative facades.

His series "mechanimals" is a collection of illustrations that are a combination of half animal and half mechanical. The paste-ups find their way to the empty spaces on walls and spaces of buildings in France.

"The artist says that he’d like people to think that they are robots, hybrid beings from two different and unrelated worlds, and tries to find a balance between the two themes in his drawings. The important message he tries to convey is that developing technical and human progress is essential, but it should not be done at the expense of natural heritage." - via

Denise Brown: Ceramic Vessels

Denise Brown is a ceramic artist who lives and works from a farm in rural Fenland Cambridgeshire. She uses stoneware clay and hand builds her pieces using slab-building, press-forming (moulds made by her) and coiling techniques. She decorates each vessel with images inspired by the nature and landscapes surrounding her. Owls, seagulls, lighthouses, harbors, boats and rabbits is a primary theme incised by hand using a potter's knife. Through her ceramics "She aims to evoke memories and a sense of nostalgia."

The artist uses a copper carbonate wash to create the outline on the designs. After glazing, she applies 22ct gold leaf or 12ct white gold leaf to finish her work. You can find stockists of her work here and take a closer look at her ceramics on her website

Thomas Hill and His Wide Eyed Birds

I featured about Thomas Hill's bird sculptures on the blog earlier here. Mixed media artist makes sculptures made of wood, copper and steel. His sculptures are inspired by birds and he tries to capture their personalities in a playful way. The birds often have wide eyes, feathers made from sturdy wire and long, lean legs.

“I tend to think of all my pieces as character studies. Spend a few seconds observing a bird; the turn of the head, the flash of an eye, puffed up feathers; each gesture conveys a wealth of visual material for the artist as we see the bird consider and interact intelligently with the world around it,” via.

His birds have been exhibited in museums and galleries all around the world. He has participated in solo exhibitions at ARTspace at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Fuller Craft Museum and De Morgan Centre and Velvet da Vinci Gallery. His work can be found in corporate, public, and private collections. His work has been featured in numerous publications like Metalsmith and CRART magazine. You can learn more about him and his work here.
